History of Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park was first gazette as a controlled hunting area in 1993 and in 1963 it was upgraded to a game drive and finally to a national park in 1983. The name of park is derived from a story about two brothers, Mburo and Kigarama who lived in the low-lying savannah plains, historically the region is known as Kaaro Karungi.

According to the legendary story, one-night Kigarama had a dream that they were going to have a lot of rain which would result into floods and destroy their properties and the area as well. Kigarama informed his brother about the dream but it was dismissed by Mburo, Kigarama decided to leave the area and resided at the overlooking hills leaving his brother behind.

The region was ravaged by rain resulting into floods and drowning of Mburo and his properties, thus the name Mburo and the hills were named Kigarama.

Getting to Lake Mburo National Park

By road – the park is located in Mbarara district along the Kampala – Mbarara highway approximately 3.5-hour drive from Kampala City, from Mbarara, you take a turn left after 13 kilometers past Lyantonde and head to Sanga Gate. Both junctions are clearly labeled signpost to Lake Nakuru National Park. From Sanga Trading Center it is 13 kilometers to Sanga Gate and 5 kilometers from the main road to Nshara Gate and about 20 minutes drives from Rwonyo Park’s Head Quarters.

By Air – there are chartered and domestic flights from either Entebbe International Airport of Kajjansi Airstrip to Mbarara Airport then connect to the park by a vehicle. Flights to Lake Mburo National Park are operated by Bar Aviation and AeroLink.
