Habinyanja Gorilla Family Group
Habinyanja gorilla family is one of the pioneers of gorilla trekking safaris in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park.
As the saying goes that “Old is gold!,” don’t doubt it when it comes to tracking this gorilla group. Book and get to know the true meaning of that statement.
Habinyanja gorilla group/ Group H is one of the oldest habituated gorilla families in the Uganda’s Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. It is found in the northern sector of the forest in Buhoma region. Habituated from 1997 and opened for the real mountain gorilla trekking activity for travellers in 1999.
This sector being the oldest is the most popular and also the most highly marketed area in the park. Other factors also being its proximity to the roads heading to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Forest National Park, Rwenzori Mountain National Park as well as the easiest gateway to Kampala from the Bwindi Impenetrable.
Being one of the oldest habituated gorilla family in Buhoma sector, it has continued to register huge influx of travelers trekking it ever since 1997.
It was officially opened up for tourists to begin tracking it in 1999 under the leadership of the Mugurusi Silverback. The Mugurusi literally translates to as “an old man.”
Gorilla families in Bwindi
The mountain gorilla group was first sighted around the swamp thus its name ‘Nyanja’ meaning water (or a pool of water).
Sad enough, Mugurusi silverback died and left behind the two brothers of Rwansigazi and Mwirima to take care of the throne that did not go beyond 2002 when Mwirima broke off to start own gorilla family group of Rushegura.
The differences in traits brought misunderstanding between these two brothers of Mwirima and Rwansigazi. Mwirima preferred being stationed at one point of leadership and Rwansigazi loved adventure.
After Mwirima breaking off, Rwansigazi who was aging released his leadership power to his son “Makara.” Apparently, Makara is the incumbent leader of Habinyanja gorilla group.
Present day, Habinyanja gorilla family group consists of 18 family members that include: Maraya the blackback, Mizayo (Was so brutally killed by poacher’s traps and spears), Binyonko, Nyabuche, Nyamuhango, Rukundo, Kisho, and Rugyendo the adult females, Kavuyo the sub adult male and Ruyombo the sub adult female, Malaika, Hamusini, Elisa are juveniles. Habinyanja gorilla family group moves daily in the forests and covers a wider area within Buhoma region.
The real experience attained in an encounter with the mountain gorillas is so unexplainable. The memories are so long suffering. The stories are so inspiring and continually fresh.
